Saddle shoes, sometimes referred to as saddle oxfords, soured into popularity in the 50's but were common before as they were worn for athletics. Teens in the 40's started the trend for saddle shoes and bobby socks. They were mostly black and white as seen in the picture above with their natural colored sole which would have either been brown or black. Starting in Junior High, every girl and boy would wear saddle shoes. The shoes looked best with poddle skirts for the women and on the weekends and in summer they looked best with blue denim jeans. The teens that did this were called bobby soxers because they would always wear white socks with their saddle shoes. The socks are generally ankle length and white with a upper lace that folds over sometimes with a ribbon or bow which adds creativity to a plain but unique shoe. Housewives also loved to wear saddles shoes. They would say the shoe would be comfortable around the house yet too informal to be proper. Housewives would then quickly changed into their heels before their husbands came home.
